How GST Calculation Works in India: Formulas & Mathematics

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a destination-based, comprehensive indirect tax levied on the manufacture, sale, and consumption of goods and services throughout India. Depending on whether your transaction is quoted with or without tax, different mathematical formulas apply:

1. GST Exclusive Formula (Adding Tax)

Used when the base selling price is fixed, and tax must be calculated on top.

GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) / 100
Total Amount = Base Price + GST Amount

2. GST Inclusive Formula (Extracting Tax)

Used for MRP pricing or when reverse-calculating the pre-tax base amount from a gross invoice.

Base Price = (Gross Amount × 100) / (100 + GST Rate)
GST Amount = Gross Amount - Base Price

CGST, SGST, and IGST Explained

Indian GST structure distributes revenue between the Union Government and state administrations:

  • Intra-State Supply (Within the Same State): If the supplier and place of supply reside within the same state (e.g., Maharashtra to Maharashtra), the tax divides equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). On an 18% slab, 9% goes to the Centre and 9% to the State.
  • Inter-State Supply (Across Different States): If the supplier and client are in different states (e.g., Karnataka to Delhi), IGST (Integrated GST) is levied at the full 18%, collected by the Central Government and apportioned to the consuming state.
  • Union Territory GST (UTGST): Replaces SGST in Union Territories without a legislature (e.g., Andaman & Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Ladakh).

GST Rules for Freelancers, Creators & Software Engineers

Developers, freelance copywriters, and agency founders frequently encounter unique GST compliance obligations:

  1. Turnover Threshold for Registration: Service providers must register for GST once their annual aggregate turnover exceeds ₹20 Lakhs (₹10 Lakhs in Special Category North-Eastern states). For physical goods suppliers, the threshold is ₹40 Lakhs.
  2. Export of Services under LUT (0% GST): If you provide digital services, software development, or consulting to overseas clients (billed in foreign convertible currency like USD or EUR), the transaction qualifies as an "Export of Service" under Section 16 of the Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) Act, 2017. Under Rule 96A of the CGST Rules, by filing an annual Letter of Undertaking (LUT) on Form GST RFD-11 through the official GST Common Portal, you can invoice international clients at 0% GST without paying tax upfront or waiting for refund claims.
  3. Invoicing Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM): Certain specified purchases (like goods transport agency services or legal fees) require the recipient to pay GST directly under RCM.
